The Color of Magic The Color of Magic / Chapter 5 Summary

How It All Goes Down

  • Broadman has ducked out of the Drum and made his way to an alchemist. The old alchemist swirls the gold coin in a saucer of acid.
  • Broadman asks if it's genuine, but the alchemist believes that's a hard question to answer.
  • It's not genuine coinage in the regards for what passes as gold in Ankh-Morpork, where there's barely a third of gold per coin—it is genuine, though, if you consider that it's pure gold.
  • Broadman leaves, and the old alchemist sends a short note via rat courier to an unknown person.
  • At that same moment, elsewhere in the city a fortuneteller views the future. In her horror, she sells most of her belongings and buys the fastest horse she can, but he dies in a freak accident in the Morpork Mountains all the same.
