The Poisonwood Bible Book 6, Chapter 1 Summary

How It All Goes Down

Rachel Price. The Equatorial.

  • Another book—but no prologue this time.
  • Rachel's become quite the little dictator of her whites-only hotel in the middle of Africa: "It's like running a whole little country" (6.1.7), she says.
  • She has considered moving back to America, but she knows she wouldn't be popular there, so what's the point?
  • Her one regret: not having children. (Er, we think that's probably a good thing.) Turns out that Eeben Axelroot gave her an infection which caused mondo female troubles.
  • Here's a choice phrase from Rachel's parting words: "You don't have to like [Africa] but you sure have to admit it's out there" (6.1.20).
  • Funny, you could say the same about Rachel.
