The Poisonwood Bible Book 1, Chapter 10 Summary

How It All Goes Down

Adah

  • Father ordered the men of Kilanga to throw dynamite into the river. An explosive new fishing method! Adah wonders where he got dynamite, because "Certainly none of us carried it over here in our drawers" a.k.a. panties (1.10.2).
  • The village has quite a feast, but… oops. They can't eat all the fish, and the leftovers spoil in the heat. No Frigidaire in the Congo.
  • That doesn't deter Father. He keeps preaching and trying (and failing) to baptize the heathens of Kilanga.
  • At dinner, Father tells the girls a parable about a group of people who fixed a Mercedes's fan belt with some woven elephant grass. "It just takes adaptability" (1.10.32), says the man who refuses to adapt.
