I Know This Much is True Chapter 25 Summary

How It All Goes Down

  • We're finally back in the 90s, with Dominick and Lisa Sheffer discussing Thomas.
  • She says that he's occasionally teased by other patients, but they're developing strategies for him to cope.
  • As the hearing approaches, Dominick should compile a list of potential advocates to write letters on Thomas's behalf.
  • When Sheffer leaves, Dr. Patel pokes her head in the office, and asks Dominick why he canceled his last appointment.
  • He blames it on the rain… or the lack of. It was a nice day, and Dominick had to work.
  • Dr. Patel advises him not to cancel again, and leaves.
  • Maintenance arrives, and it's Ralph Drinkwater; Dominick tries to talk to him, but Ralph gives him the silent treatment.
  • Eventually Ralph caves in, and tells Dominick that Thomas is okay.
  • But when Dominick tries to give Ralph a slip of paper with his phone number to give Thomas, Ralph won't take it.
  • However, he does point out that Thomas is right outside, in the courtyard.
  • Dominick watches him, and gets angry because the guy passing out cigarettes is ignoring Thomas.
  • Then they start throwing a hackey sack at him, and Dominick can't do anything about it.
  • When the patients go in, Dominick notices that Ralph took the phone number anyway.
  • Sheffer comes back, and says that Dr. Patel still hasn't decided whose side she's on for the hearing. Will she keep Thomas at Hatch or recommend he be released to Dominick?
  • Sheffer thinks the latter is a terrible idea, because what is Dominick going to do, quit his job and stay up 24/7 to monitor his brother?
  • She tries to say that Hatch isn't the "hellhole" (25.206) Dominick thinks it is.
