A Million Little Pieces

(3) Base Camp

At a glance, A Million Little Pieces looks like an epic e.e. cummings poem:

no quotation marks, no paragraph breaks

Parts

Like

This.

But upon closer inspection, James Frey uses a very simple writing style. Short words. Short sentences. Short words. Short sentences. Repetition. Repetition. Repetition.

So although the book itself can be as easy to read as a Little Golden Book about heroin ("See James. See drugs. See James do drugs"), the experience itself can be a little tiresome. But maybe that's how addiction is, too: Short thoughts. Creating a feeling. Of immediacy. Short thoughts. Just wanting. Wanting. Wanting. Something. Over and over and over and over.

Until.

You.

Break.

The.

Cycle.
