Tom Chisum is your generic jock guy. He's athletic. He plays football. He's hot. He's stupid. (He gets his foot stuck in his football helmet. Don't ask.)
And he's in the movie to show us that Sandy isn't shallow. Tom may be a hottie with a body, but Sandy wants a guy with inner beauty, which is why she picks Danny over Tom.
