Tuesdays With Morrie Chapter 25 Summary

How It All Goes Down

The Fourteenth Tuesday: We Say Goodbye

  • It's cold and wet as Mitch arrives at Morrie's house for the final visit. Charlotte had called warning him that Morrie isn't doing well.
  • At the door, Mitch nervously checks to see if he brought tapes, even though he knows that he has.
  • He helps Charlotte tidy up the kitchen and puts food in the fridge, which has become a tradition even though he knows Morrie can't eat.
  • Mitch walks into Morrie's room and a chill goes through him as he remembers his words "when you're in bed, you're dead" (24.18). His professor's body is so tiny in the bed that he barely looks like he's there.
  • Morrie calls Mitch his "good friend" and holds out his hand, very weakly, to be held.
  • He says goodbye, telling Mitch very slowly and faintly that he loves him. Morrie cries like a small child and Mitch hugs him tight for several minutes.
  • He gives him one last kiss and then straightens up to leave. As he blinks back tears, Morrie smacks his lips in what Mitch interprets as approval: He's finally made Mitch cry.
