Tuesdays With Morrie Chapter 1 Summary

How It All Goes Down

The Curriculum

  • Morrie's last class is taught once a week in his house. It's different from a typical class in a few key ways, though.
  • It's about Life (yes, capital L), and it isn't taught in a classroom, nor does it use books or give grades. Like a typical class, however, it still requires participation and a bit of note-taking.
  • Oh—and this class ends with a funeral rather than a graduation… and the narrator is the only student.
  • Flashback time: It's the narrator's college graduation, back in the 1970s; he introduces his parents to Morrie Schwartz, his favorite teacher and a spunky little old gentleman.
  • Morrie's last words to Mitch at graduation are teary and sentimental—in short, he hopes that they'll remain friends.
  • Stay tuned to see how this comes about.
