The Revenant: A Novel of Revenge Prologue: September 1, 1823 Summary

How It All Goes Down

  • We start things off in the middle of action as a "wounded man" angrily watches a boy and a man abandon him (p.1). And we're off to the races.
  • The wounded guy has a fever, so he doesn't really understand what's going on. Same here.
  • As far as we can tell, there are some bad guys coming this way, which is why the wounded man's caretakers are jumping ship. Wounded Guy has no issue with this, but he just wants one thing: his gun.
  • The man (who wears "wolf skin" clothing) scoffs at this, and then straight up steals all of the wounded guy's stuff (p.8). Including the gun.
  • This man also takes the wounded guy's knife and tosses it to the boy before walking away. The boy hesitates, but after a moment turns tail and follows.
  • The wounded man, though almost dead, feels a renewed fire in his belly—the fire of revenge.
