How It All Goes Down
- Glass has built a small fire in a valley on the banks of the river. As he cooks his catch of the day, a rabbit, he becomes entranced by the sound of the river.
- Meanwhile, Fitzgerald is traveling down the Missouri about "a quarter mile upriver from Glass" (2.20.6). He had heard Glass shooting the rabbit and wondered whether it was the Arikara.
- As Fitzgerald slows down to avoid alerting the shooter, Glass is digging into some fresh rabbit legs. A delicacy, 'round these parts.
- Fitzgerald can see the fire burning, and can see a white man sitting under a blanket.
- Fitzgerald's boat ends up loudly scraping a rock. Glass hears this and rushes towards the sound, seeing the boat but not recognizing its pilot.
- Meanwhile, things are looking up for Captain Henry. The trip to Yellowstone was smooth. Fort Manuel is in great shape. He's built solid relationships with the local tribes. He even manages to buy a big load of horses off the Crow.
- Glass is less enthused when he arrives at an empty Fort Union. Luckily, he quickly realizes where Henry headed, and he follows him to Yellowstone.
- While stopping for supplies at Fort Talbot, Fitzgerald realizes that the man he saw on the river was Glass. You better watch your back, buddy.
