Background Support

Being the first Bond movie, Dr. No serves as our initial glimpse into the inner workings of British Central Intelligence, MI6. We briefly meet M (Bernard Lee), the no-nonsense head of the agency who wants to keep fatalities down on his watch. A good goal for any manager.

We also meet Moneypenny (Lois Maxwell), the secretary who has a will-she-or-won't-she relationship with James Bond. (Spoiler: she never will).

Missing in action is Q. In Dr. No, the gadgets that define the franchise have yet to make an appearance. Instead, an "armorer" named Major Boothroyd (Peter Burton) makes a quick appearance to give Bond a new gun, the closet to a gadget he'll get in this outing. In London, we also witness Bond have a brief fling with Sylvia Trench (Eunice Gayson) illustrating Bond's commitment to free love in the 1960s.

Across the Bond…er, across the pond in Jamaica, we get a glimpse of Strangways (Timothy Moxon) before he's gunned down, putting the entire plot into motion. Bond's contact in Jamaica is the chief secretary of government house, Pleydell-Smith (Louise Blaazer) whose only role is to dump information on 007.

Finally, we meet some local people, like the inexplicably named Puss Feller (Lester Pendergast), a barkeep who moonlights as an alligator wrestler. He puts his chokehold skills to work on Bond. There is also a nameless photographer (Marguerite LeWars), who is sending photos of Bond to Dr. No. Is the doctor into scrapbooking?
