Character Analysis
Hot Potato
Miss Taro is a woman who, like Katniss Everdeen, appears to be named after a potato.
This sultry spud has eyes, secretly spying on spying on Bond's movements for Dr. No. She attempts to use Bond's lust against him, luring him to her apartment, then alerting assassins that he's on his way. The tarantula left in Bond's bed has nothing on this black widow. But both spiders fail at their jobs. At least Miss Taro is only arrested, not beaten to death with a shoe.
Zena Marshall, the actress who plays the presumably Chinese Taro, is French, English and Irish. In case percentages aren't your strong suit, that's 0% Chinese. Both her casting and her role in the film indicate a shaky relationship with race evident in Bond films from the beginning.
The half-Chinese Dr. No is played by a man with no Chinese heritage as well. Also, all Chinese people in the film appear to be bad guys, portrayed as nosy and deceitful. On race, Dr. No is more like Dr. No Respect.
