Here’s your shmoop du jour, brought to you by the wheel.

00:06

The second best invention of all time, after that “upright sleeper” we bought from SkyMall.

00:11

A wheel with a diameter of 12 inches makes four rotations.

00:15

How far does a point on the outside of the circle travel?

00:19

Use 3.14 for pi and round to the nearest whole number, measured in inches.

00:28

Hopefully our destination isn’t too remote, because with our wheel only making

00:31

4 rotations, it doesn’t appear we’re going very far.

00:34

So… our wheel…we’ll call it a circle for practical purposes…

00:36

…has a diameter of 12 inches.

00:39

We know the circumference of a circle is diameter times pi, and we’re told to just round pi

00:46

down to two decimal places…

00:48

…so…we get 12 times 3.14 comes out to 37.68 inches.

00:54

But that’s just the distance around the edge of the wheel for ONE rotation.

00:58

We’re spinnin’ this bad boy around FOUR times…

01:01

...so 37.68 times 4 is 150.72 inches…

01:07

…now we round to the nearest whole number, and we come out with 151 inches

01:12

Sheesh, that was a lot of effort just to move forward a few yards.
