Periphetes in Theseus: Birth and Early Adventures

The first bad guy that Theseus slays on the road to Athens, Periphetes is famous for whacking people on the head with his iron club and robbing them. (Yeah, he wasn't exactly an overachiever.) Theseus kills Periphetes with the club, and then carries the weapon around himself. The club of Periphetes actually became a symbol of Theseus, making him similar Heracles who was also symbolized by a club. ("Welcome to the Club club, bub.") Some say Periphetes was a son of Poseidon, like Theseus, but it is also said that the bandit was a son of the god, Hephaestus.
