  1. Across Five Aprils
A boy navigates the early teen years amidst fights, death, rumbles, and a good education. There are two major sides pitted against each other. Sound familiar? It's not about Ponyboy and the Greasers, but it sure sounds like it. Across Five Aprils tells of the boy Jethro and how his life plays out during the Civil War.

  2. Monster
Oh, goodness. Here's another one, also with a male lead who's involved with gangs, death, theft, and a touch of isolation. Steve's life certainly isn't a bed of roses while he's in jail and on trial for being the lookout during a crime. He tries to cope with it all, eventually gets released, but continues to be tormented by the question: Am I a monster?
