How we cite our quotes: (Line)
Quote #1
Overnight, very
Whitely, discreetly,
Very quietly (1-3)
These mushrooms aren't exactly playing trumpets as they grow. They come into the world so quietly that most people wouldn't even notice. We wonder, though, does this make them passive, or just a little stealthier than most?
Quote #2
Diet on water,
On crumbs of shadow,
Bland-mannered, asking
Little or nothing. (19-21)
These lines totally paint a passive picture. You've got to be seriously unassertive to just eat water and shadow. Maybe we're judging them harshly. It could be that they're on a really weird diet plan. Hey, we've heard of weirder.
Quote #3
[...] we are meek,
We are edible, (25-27)
Wow, these mushrooms are so meek that they allow themselves to be eaten. That's about as meek as it gets. This takes the whole idea of them barely eating anything and sends it to a deeper, darker level. They are so giving and passive by nature, that they'll let themselves be completely consumed.
