Character Role Analysis

George Banks, Dawes Sr. and Jr.

If Mary's the movie's protagonist, than George would be her antagonist—even though he's ultimately one of the good guys. He's the one who struggles against Mary, getting jealous of her, and threatening to fire her.

However, he's really no match for her—given the fact that she has magical powers beyond all reckoning. George tries bumblingly to act against Mary, but ends up falling right into her hands, despite all that.

But if George is himself the protagonist, than Dawes Sr. and Jr.—and everyone who works at the bank—are the antagonist.

The bank managers represent all of George's false values: his idea that a family should be run entirely on discipline and efficiency, the same way a bank is. George needs to overcome that idea—and he does, with laughter. His good humor infects Dawes Sr. and Jr. and George brings them over to the good side in the end, too.
