Dr. Yamane

How do we know that Dr. Yamane is the film's mentor character? Clue number one: he's a professor of paleontology. He's also the character that officially discovers Godzilla. Through his research, he learns about Godzilla and how the creature came to exist. After he's obtained his knowledge, he teaches others what he's learned, like when he presents his findings at the Diet committee meeting. When a teacher does his teaching thing in a film, that's a pretty big clue you've got yourself a mentor character.
