Antagonist
Character Role Analysis
The Black Cat
From the man's point of view, the black cat is his personal antagonist. With it's missing eye, and gallows chest, it serves as a continual reminder of what he did to Pluto. In this sense, the narrator believes that the cat refused to let him be at peace. By refusing to leave him alone for a minute, the cat drives the narrator to deeper levels of irritation and cruelty. According to the narrator, the animal even makes him kill his wife with an axe. Then the cat hides in the tomb, waiting to expose him.
