Character Role Analysis

Adam Cook

As a character, Adam doesn't have a lot of depth. No offense, but what do we really know about him? He's witty, he's grumpy, and he's a bang-up piano player. Oh, and he smokes like a chimney. Adam's role in An American in Paris is to convey crucial information and ride shotgun with the audience. It's through him that we know Jerry and Henri are both in love with Lise, even if Adam doesn't realize it quite as quickly as we do. Adam doesn't grow or change over the course of the movie; he exists solely to set up the plot and knock out some rad songs on the piano.
