Parallel Images

Parallel Images

Parallel images are everywhere in 12 Monkeys. And we mean everywhere, everywhere.

Don't believe us? Here's a quick list:

  • Young Cole's eyes open and close the film.
  • Cages, cages, and more cages.
  • Cole enjoys a rough-and-tumble broom shower in both 2035 and 1996. Those bristles exfoliate like you wouldn't believe.
  • When the psychiatrists in 1990 interview Cole, they are positioned in a manner nearly identical to the Scientists in 2035.
  • A stuffed bear in 1996 poses exactly like a-very-much-alive bear from 2035.
  • Speaking of 2035, Cole's exploration of the desolate Philadelphia shows many prominent buildings. When Cole revisits these sites in 1996, they are shot from the same angles.
  • "Silent Night" plays on loop from 1996 to 2035.
  • And, of course, Cole's recurring dream is shot nearly frame-for-frame each time, but tiny differences arise here and there.

And these are just the more obvious ones; we're sure there are plenty of subtle parallels that slipped right into our subconscious. As you may have noticed, there's a pattern found in most of these image sets: one appears in the '90s and the other in 2035, one in the past and the other the future.

The goal here is to connect the two timelines and show how the past influences the future. The very power the psychiatrists' wield over Cole in the past extends and multiples into the future. There, we see the Scientists ruling society as a whole. The weathered and deteriorating buildings in 1996 have become full-on ruins in 2035. And the dominated and stuff bear from 1996 has regained its place in nature come 2035.

There's no escaping the past's influence on the future in 12 Monkeys. But if humanity is lucky…actually no. We're pretty much doomed.
