For Minors: Instructional Permit & Provisional License

Key thing for those of you under 18: get Mom, Dad, or your guardian to sign your application. And there are a ton of things to remember as a young driver.

A short list:

  • You must be at least 15 years old to obtain an Instructional Permit and at least 16 years old for a Class D License.
  • You have to pass the normal vision and written exams for the Instructional Permit, as well as the driving test for the Class D.
  • Bring all of the proper identification. It's a lot harder than you think to get McLovin printed on your license.
  • If you're under 18, you have to be in compliance with school attendance. So, if you planned on dropping out of high school to become a taxi driver, you're out of luck.
  • You must provide proof that you completed both a state-approved driver education course and an Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program, likely given at your school.
