There was a time when, including overtime, a toll taker could earn upwards of $70,000 annually, but with the rising cost effectiveness of automated toll booths like EZ Pass, salaries and benefits for toll takers have been cut dramatically.
There's also a wide salary variance based on location and position. Entry-level toll workers earn between $16,000 and $45,000 per year—that is, where this job still actually exists. If you feel that tolls are your calling, you might earn a better living becoming a maintenance person for EZ Pass or some such automated toll-taking business.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average salary for toll takers as of 2011 was $34,110 annually, which, on the bright side, is significantly higher than the average for all other types of cashiers (source).
