[Coop and Dino singing]

00:13

Let's play pretend real quick.

00:15

It’ll be fun, we promise. [Boy standing in bedroom]

00:17

C'mon, we're wearing a fake mustache and everything, don't leave us hanging. [woman appears at boys window with fake mustache]

00:20

Let’s say someone asks you what the word “delicious” means.

00:24

You might be tempted to say, “well, delicious is what you call food that’s...

00:27

I don’t know, delicious.”

00:29

But that wouldn't be very helpful for someone who doesn’t know what the word delicious means.

00:32

So you might try to use different words that mean more or less the same thing. [Girl brings out BBQ food to boys]

00:36

You might say that delicious means “tasty” or “enjoyable” or “scrumptious.”

00:40

And that, friends, pals, buddies, and comrades…is what synonyms are all about.

00:45

See what we did there?

00:46

So what is a synonym? [Coop explaining what a synonym is]

00:47

Well, synonyms are words that are different, but have the same, or very similar meanings.

00:52

They’re super useful for when you want to talk about the same topics and ideas over

00:56

and over again without constantly repeating yourself.

00:58

Take this scenario, for instance: let's say you just saw your friend's play and you thought

01:02

it was hilarious.

01:04

You might tell them that you found it, well, hilarious.

01:06

But then what if your other friend came up to you and also asked what you thought? [Girl friend approaches man]

01:10

It might sound a bit odd to use the exact same word again, right?

01:13

So maybe you'd say it was funny…

01:15

Or amusing…

01:16

Or side-splitting.

01:17

Yup.

01:17

They're all synonyms, because they all basically mean, "funny."

01:21

Using synonyms is a great way to add description and variety to both your day-to-day speech [Coop discussing what synonyms are useful for]

01:24

and your writing.

01:26

Let's say you want to write an advertisement for your garage sale.

01:28

You could just use the first word that comes to mind and say that the garage sale will

01:32

be “great.”

01:33

But maybe you want to sound more interesting than that.

01:35

So what do you do?

01:36

Grab your handy-dandy thesaurus, of course. [Thesaurus book appears]

01:38

A thesaurus is a book that lists all of the synonyms that a word has so that you can find

01:42

the best one possible.

01:43

Flip to the word you initially came up with and see what synonyms are listed. [Pages in thesaurus flick by]

01:47

In the case of “great” we have...

01:49

Brilliant, excellent, outstanding, and superb.

01:52

Choose your favorite and suddenly our garage sale advertisement went from great to OUTSTANDING. [Garage sale advertisement]

01:58

All because of the power of synonyms.

02:00

Now your old toys will be selling like hot cakes!

02:02

…That’s a synonym for pancakes. [Woman holding plate of pancakes]

02:04

Whatever, we just really like synonyms...
