oct 28 Learn More St. Louis Arch Completed

St. Louis's Gateway Arch was completed on this day in 1965. The gateway, whose look was determined through a design competition in the '40s, is a monument to the Louisiana Purchase and America's westward expansion. It's also kind of an optical illusion: it doesn't look like it, but the 630-foot tall arch is just as wide as it is tall.
