Joan of Arc was martyred on this day in 1431. Kind of. She was executed on this day, having been sentenced to death as a heretic, but she wasn't officially pronounced a martyr until twenty-five years later. It took that long for somebody to say, "Wait a minute. We burned that French girl at the stake for wearing men's clothing? For real?" and then open a retrial. On July 7, 1456, Joan of Arc was finally found innocent.
