may 29 Learn More The Supreme Court Rules That Baseball is Exempt from Antitrust Law
Remember when Major League Baseball used to have three leagues: American, National, and Federal? No? That's because the American and National Leagues ran the Federal League out of town in 1915. The Baltimore Terrapins, a Federal League ball club, sued, claiming that the other two leagues were breaking the antitrust law and had a monopoly on all the good players. On this day in 1922, the Supreme Court ruled that baseball is a sport, not a business, making it the only pro sport in America exempt from antitrust law. That's right; Major League Baseball is above the law. Maybe that explains Rollie Fingers' mustache.
