may 14 Learn More Lewis and Clark Begin Expedition

The Lewis and Clark Expedition departed on this day in 1804. Of all of the curious things that the two men encountered, perhaps the most curious was a humble prairie dog. Lewis and Clark simply had no idea what the heck it was. After several attempts, they finally flushed the poor little critter out of its hole—literally; they dumped half-a-dozen barrels of water into it. Then they proudly sent what they called a "barking squirrel" back to Thomas Jefferson as a gift. The president was stoked, and the prairie dog took up permanent residence at the White House.
