Mr. Gilbert isn't the best guide/mentor ever, since he gives some pretty miserable advice to Marian and Laura. But he definitely attempts to look out for Laura's interests, and he later provides valuable contacts for Walter (namely, Mr. Kyrle) when he needs legal advice. Hey, he's the best we got in this mixed-up tale.
