Laurel Sewell Timeline & Summary

  • Laurel has her first day at public high school and pretty much hates it, except for meeting David in her biology class.
  • On the second day of school, Laurel has lunch with David and his friends and feels awkward; after a few days, though, she starts to feel like she's fitting in. David and Laurel start hanging out after school (in part so she can get help with biology), and she tells him that she was adopted.
  • Laurel finds her first-ever zit on her back, but then it grows into a lump, one that gets bigger by the day. This totally freaks her out.
  • Then the bump blossoms, so that she has a flower growing out of her back. Laurel snips a piece to have David analyze under his microscope, and then she tells him what it really is: part of her.
  • This realtor guy Barnes shows up to talk to Laurel's parents about appraising their property in Orick; Barnes makes Laurel uneasy.
  • Laurel goes with her parents to their house in Orick, and in the forest meets a mysterious guy named Tamani. He charms and confuses her, and tells her that, like him, she's a faerie.
  • She is completely weirded out by this, and eventually tells David, who says it kind of makes sense for her to be a plant, based on his studies of her biology (which is not as creepy as it sounds).
  • David informs Laurel that she doesn't have a heartbeat, and likely doesn't have a heart; she also doesn't seem to need to breathe oxygen. Again, she's weirded out by all this.
  • Laurel accepts David's invitation to the school's costume dance, and with her blossom out in the open as part of her costume, she actually feels good about being a faerie.
  • The petals of her blossom fall out, and soon it's totally gone (like Tamani said it would be). Laurel decides she needs more answers, and goes back to see Tamani.
  • She learns that she's a Fall faerie, that she chose to have her memories erased when she came to the human world as a child, and that her parents selling the land would be terrible.
  • Laurel's dad gets really sick, and Laurel's mom decides to sell the property to Barnes pronto, since they need money for the medical bills.
  • Laurel gets David to drive her to check out Barnes's place, and they're captured.
  • They're thrown into the river, but since Laurel and David exchange breaths while underwater (Laurel does the plant thing of converting carbon dioxide to oxygen), they survive.
  • They drive to Orick for help, where Tamani tells Laurel that Barnes and his folk are trolls (a.k.a. the natural enemies of faeries).
  • Then David and Laurel drive Tamani to Barnes's place so he can take care of the trolls. Tamani's shot but Laurel helps save his life, even though Barnes gets away.
  • Back to Orick, so Tamani can be healed and Laurel can talk to Jamison, a wise old faerie who gives her a diamond to bribe her parents to keep the property, and a healing potion for her dad.
  • Laurel's dad gets better, her mom agrees not to sell the property, and Laurel solidifies her relationship with David.
  • She sees Tamani once to say goodbye to him since she needs to stay in the human world, and discovers that they were connected before she left faerie world. They kiss once before parting.
