It's pretty clear Max is isolating himself by disobeying the rules of his household here. What's worse is that he doesn't even look like he's enjoying himself, so what, exactly, is the point of this misbehavior?

It's no fun being sent to your room, especially when you're already feeling a little out of sorts, which Max clearly is. Kids don't usually threaten to eat their parents unless they're experiencing some tough emotions, and now Max has to deal with his on his own.
