What ho! A functioning couple? In New York City? It's a rom com miracle!

But seriously, folks, Jess and Marie, despite their rocky beginnings, end up blissfully happy well before Harry and Sally manage to get their act together.

In that sense, they serve as a foil for Harry and Sally because they aren't afraid to jump in and, well, love each other. Even when they disagree, they communicate, and we see in them what Harry and Sally could have if they managed to get over their hang-ups and get out of their own way.
