Rachel Watson Timeline & Summary

  • Rachel rides the train to and from London and creates a fantasy life for a couple whose house she passes by every day.
  • One day she sees the wife kissing another man—gasp—and a couple days later, the wife is gone.
  • Rachel was there the night Megan went missing, but she was blackout drunk and doesn't remember what happened.
  • After coming across as a creepy stalker to the police, Rachel contacts Scott, the missing woman's husband, to tell him his wife was having an affair.
  • To not come across as a creepy stalker to Scott, too, Rachel lies and says she knew Megan, his wife, from her art gallery.
  • They learn the man Megan kissed was Dr. Kamal Abdic, Megan's therapist. When Dr. Abdic is questioned and released by the police, Rachel makes an appointment to see him and check him out for herself.
  • He turns out to be a good therapist and helps Rachel analyze her blackouts and lost memories.
  • When Megan turns up dead, Rachel and Scott try to figure out who killed her. They even, um, do the locomotion together. We're not sure how that helps the investigation.
  • Soon, Anna, Rachel's ex-husband's new wife, gets tired of Rachel contacting Tom, so she tells the police that Rachel is a creepy liar who never knew Megan at all.
  • The police tell Scott, and he gets drunk and angry and throws Rachel into a locked room.
  • He lets her go, but she wonders if Scott may have murdered Megan.
  • But then she recovers a memory from the night Megan went missing: Tom was in the underpass getting into a car with a woman.
  • Rachel realizes the woman couldn't have been Anna because she didn't have her ugly baby with her. So it must have been Megan.
  • Rachel goes to Anna to tell her that Tom is a murderer, but Tom is there.
  • He confesses to the murder and attacks Rachel, but Rachel kills him with a corkscrew.
  • What's she going to do now that she killed her murderous ex-husband? She takes a vacation to gather her thoughts.
