Harve Bennett, Nicholas Meyer, Steve Meerson, Peter Krikes

As with most things in The Voyage Home, the film's script started with director Leonard Nimoy.

Given more creative control over The Voyage Home than the previous film in the series, The Search for Spock, Nimoy wanted to take things in a different direction by forgoing a villain and stressing an environmental message. He wrote the initial story with Harve Bennett, a producer widely credited with revitalizing the series with The Wrath of Khan. It was his idea to use Khan as that film's main villain.

With the groundwork laid, Nimoy handed the story over to Steve Meerson and Peter Krikes, two novice screenwriters. Their draft was flatly rejected. Although Meerson and Krikes would receive credit on the final product, few of their additions made it through to the shooting script.

Instead, producers handed the script to screenwriters with a better grasp of the series. Harve Bennett helped write the final draft, and Nicholas Meyer contributed heavily. Meyer directed the second film in the series, The Wrath of Khan, and performed uncredited work on its script as well.

The writers chose an interesting tactic this time around: Bennett wrote the scenes set in the future, while Meyer wrote the scenes set in the past. It was an unconventional arrangement, to say the least.

Either way, Bennett's and Meyer's experience with the series was immediately apparent. Even more than previous films, The Voyage Home is a true ensemble piece that allows each character's personality to shine through.
