Hiro Protagonist Timeline & Summary

  • Deliver pizzas for Uncle Enzo. Mess up big-time. Meet Y.T., who saves his bacon by delivering a pizza that would've otherwise been late.
  • He helps Y.T. bust out of the Clink. When she gives him a tip about Vitaly Chernobyl's band being the next big thing, he follows up on it and snags the dude as a roommate.
  • On the way to help Vitaly set up for a show, Hiro pops into the Metaverse to collect info that he can sell.
  • He talks to his ex, Juanita, who warns him about Snow Crash and Raven and gives him a digital library to help him make sense of all this stuff.
  • Hiro also links up with his old hacker buddy Da5id, and watches as Da5id ingests Snow Crash and suffers a system crash, booting him from the Metaverse.
  • To kill time before Vitaly's show, Hiro accesses the library Juanita had been giving him, and starts learning about Babel (as in, Tower of), the entrepreneur L. Bob Rife, and glossolalia.
  • At the concert, Hiro meets Lagos, a researcher Juanita has been working with; unfortunately, Lagos gets killed by Raven.
  • Raven also makes a deal with a local gang, and after all this goes down, Hiro finds himself in a crazy chase with the homicidal Raven. Hiro survives, unlike most of the other participants.
  • After things settle down, Hiro is practicing his sword work when a military dude shows up to take him to see Da5id, who's suffered a stroke and is speaking in tongues.
  • Juanita tells Hiro that she's heading to Oregon for research, which Hiro interprets as a dangerous mission; after a little more research (ancient Sumerians, information viruses, etc.), Hiro boosts a bike and heads north, too.
  • Hiro cuts his way through swaths of rednecks to get to the coast where he can hop a ride out to the Raft, where he suspects Juanita is.
  • Fun fact: When you share a boat with the Mafia, things get interesting. And by interesting, we mean Raven comes and blows up your boat.
  • Stranded on a lifeboat for a few days with Mafia goons, Hiro works on a vaccine for Snow Crash on his laptop.
  • They reach the Raft, and everyone but Hiro gets killed. Hiro finds Juanita, who's hacked her own brain to become awesomer, and together they get their hands on an ancient tablet and use it to de-program Rife's Raft minions (thus saving L.A. from assault).
  • There's one more major hurdle: Rife anticipated all this, and had a plan to build a data-bomb that would destroy the minds of all the hackers who were in the Metaverse. So Hiro has to stop it.
  • Hiro pursues the bomb-carrying Raven through the Metaverse in an epic motorcycle sword-fight/chase.
  • While talking over a voice connection, Hiro tells Raven that their dads actually knew each other in a Japanese WWII prison camp, and he urges Raven to give up the quest for vengeance, but Raven refuses.
  • Luckily, Hiro puts his anti-Snow Crash program into effect before the bomb Raven delivers can blast every hacker's mind into silly putty.
  • It's heavily implied that Hiro and Juanita will get back together, and Hiro's save-the-Metaverse stunt will get him some decent paying work.
