Salim (Madhur Mittal (younger Salim played by Ashutosh Lobo Gajiwala and Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail))’s Timeline and Summary
- Salim grows up in the slums along with his little brother Jamal.
- After the brothers lose a customer in their latrine business, thanks to Jamal, Salim steals Jamal's Amitabh Bachchan autograph, selling it for a couple rupees.
- When their mother is killed in the Bombay riots, Salim and Jamal are forced to head out on their own. Soon, they meet Latika.
- The "three musketeers" are captured by the gangster Maman, who enlists them as child beggars. Maman begins to train the feisty Salim to be a "dog," keeping the other children in line.
- When Salim realizes that Maman has plans to blind Jamal—and is even asked to chloroform him himself—he's able to spring his brother loose. The two boys are able to escape on a train, but Latika can't make it on and is left behind.
- Salim and Jamal hit the road, making their way by train to Agra and the Taj Mahal. There they subsist by stealing food and conning tourists.
- When Jamal decides that he wants to return to their slum to find Latika, Salim grudgingly agrees to help.
- When they locate Latika and attempt to escape, Maman shows up to stop them. But Salim kills Maman, and this time, the three are able to successfully escape.
- The newly reunited trio regroups in an abandoned hotel.
- Before long, Salim heads out to find Javed Khan, Maman's rival mob boss. There they have a conversation, and a new business relationship is established.
- When Salim returns to the hotel, he demands to be with Latika alone. Jamal refuses, and is promptly threatened by Salim, still carrying the gun with which he killed Maman. Sure enough, Salim gets his way, and Jamal flees.
- We don't hear from Salim for several years, until Jamal contacts him out of the blue. The two decide to meet, and Salim reveals that he now works for the slumlord Javed Khan, and that Latika is "long gone."
- Salim invites his younger brother to stay with him at his apartment. But later on, unbeknownst to the older brother, Jamal follows him to Javed's compound.
- After Latika tries to escape, attempting to meet Jamal at the train station, Salim successfully tracks her down. His men give her a nasty cut to the cheek, and he returns her to Javed.
- Later on, after Jamal begins to receive notoriety during his appearance on Who Wants to be a Millionaire, Salim gives Latika his car keys and cell phones, telling her to go after Jamal. He asks for forgiveness, and explains that he'll handle Javed.
- From a bathtub filled with money, Salim makes his last stand, killing Javed before being shot repeatedly by Javed's many henchmen.
- With his last breath, he utters the words: "God is great."
