Phaeton Trivia
Brain Snacks: Tasty Tidbits of Knowledge
Phaeton was the name of a type of large-wheeled carriage back in the day. Are we the only ones who think that's a seriously sketchy name for a carriage? Seriously, would you want to get in a vehicle named for somebody who lost control of a chariot and fell to his doom?
Volkswagen makes a luxury sedan named Phaeton. We would ask the same question of the good people at Volkswagen that we would of those carriage makers back in the day. Why?!
There's a roller coaster named Phaeton at a South Korean amusement park called Gyeongju World. Check out the POV YouTube clip to see why it makes a lot more sense to name a coaster after a guy who took such a wild ride, than it does a luxury sedan or carriage.
When the ancient Greeks were getting their star gazing on, they used to identify the shining planet Jupiter as Phaeton. We think this is kind of ironic since Jupiter (aka Zeus) is the guy who killed the boy.
Some used to believe that there was once a planet between Mars and Jupiter called Phaeton, which was somehow destroyed, leaving an asteroid belt in its place. Most legit scientists think this is a bunch of hogwash now, though some folks still argue that it's true.
