Captain Vidal (Sergi López)’s Timeline and Summary
- Vidal's suits are made by a tailor. When this tailor dies his wife comes to work in the factory. Vidal notices her and marries her…or something like that.
- Vidal greets Ofelia coldly, he's very concerned with Carmen's condition.
- He does some captain-y things like setting up outposts and moving supplies to protect them in their storeroom.
- Then he has a big dinner with some important people during which he denies the story Carmen tells about their meeting and insists his father never had a watch.
- Vidal goes to investigate a train accident only to find it was a distraction. He rushes back to the house where he chases and kills the rebels who stole from the storeroom.
- He takes one alive and tortures him for information.
- When the doctor comes in to help the captive, Vidal realizes the doc is aiding the rebels and goes to shoot him.
- But first he hears a clatter in Carmen's room. He pulls Ofelia out from under the bed where he also finds the mandrake root.
- Then he's out the door where he shoots Ferreiro—which is a bit untimely because Carmen is about to go through a deadly labor.
- Following her funeral, Vidal taunts Mercedes, knowing she is in league with the rebels. He catches her as she tries to escape with Ofelia.
- After scolding Ofelia, he goes to torture Mercedes but ends up getting stabbed a couple times instead.
- He fixes himself up in his room, stitching his mouth back together because he's hardcore like that.
- Just as he realizes they are outnumbered greatly by the reinforced rebels, he sees Ofelia trying to take off with her little bro.
- Made sluggish by the medicine Ofelia slipped him, he staggers after her, eventually tracking her down in the labyrinth where he takes back his son and shoots her.
- Outside the labyrinth he is surrounded by rebels he gives them his son and ask they tell him his time of death. They deny his request, and kill Vidal.
