The Senator Timeline & Summary

  • The Senator, Tommy and Wanda greet the North Korean contingent at the Air Force base in Texas. They drive their guests to a Western clothing store to buy boots.
  • The Senator tells Dr. Song and Jun Do an inappropriate story about how the back seat of his Mustang was used in the past.
  • The Senator takes his North Korean visitors to do some Texas-style activities: weed-whacking, fishing, and shooting.
  • The Senator takes the party to his ranch for a barbecue and talks. He gives the Minister an iPod filled with country songs and carries off the rancid tiger meat.
  • Later that evening, the Senator engages in talks with Dr. Song and the Minister.
  • The Senator listens to Jun Do's story about the encounter with the U.S. Navy and doesn't buy it. He actually gets pretty hot about it, since he knows the commander in question.
  • The Senator corners Jun Do as the North Korean contingent leaves his ranch and makes him ride in the car with him to the air base. He knows that he's been played by Dr. Song.
  • The Senator tells Jun Do that the Dear Leader will never get his "toy" back after such a rotten trick—especially after sending the Minister and Jun Do, who he thinks is really Commander Ga.
  • The Senator still says he's only interested in negotiating with Jun Do in the future.
  • The Senator lands in Pyongyang to exchange the radiation detector for the American rower. He explains to the Dear Leader why they couldn't land earlier (there was nobody in the radio tower in Pyongyang) and why they had to move the plane (the tarmac is unstable).
  • The Senator refuses almost all hospitality from Kim Jong Il—except the food aid—but allows the array to be removed from the plane so that the North Koreans can inspect it.
