Bishop Myriel Timeline and Summary

  • The Bishop wasn't always a bishop. He was a partier and womanizer in his younger years. But he eventually heard the call of God and became a deeply religious man.
  • Bishop Myriel is so kind that he even visits a former member of France's Revolutionary Committee to deliver the last rites. The man is responsible for killing hundreds and thousands of people, but the bishop is still willing to have sympathy for him.
  • One day, an ex-convict named Jean Valjean comes to the Bishop's house looking for food and lodging. The bishop invites him in and doesn't care about the fact that he's an ex-con.
  • Even after Valjean robs him, the bishop treats Valjean like gold and gives him all his silverware to help him start a new life. He makes Valjean promise to use the money from the silverware to become a decent and honest man.
  • Not long after Valjean leaves to build a new life, Bishop Myriel dies of old age. Valjean goes into deep mourning out of respect.
