Simple Language
We can recognize Jimmy Santiago Baca's poetry through the language that he uses. Baca's a self-taught poet. He didn't go to regular school and thus learned to read and write on his own—pretty impressive, we know.
We'll find that his poetry uses the diction and language of everyday speech. He tends to use simple words and simple sentence structures. What's more, he writes in free verse.
We can see his straightforward language and free verse style in action in other poems of his besides "I Am Offering this Poem." Check out "A Daily Joy to be Alive" and "Cloudy Day" for more examples.
