During Welch's impassioned defense of the wounded Fisher, he says, "Little did I dream you could be so reckless and cruel as to do an injury to that lad" (Welch.90).

Welch, by using the word "lad," paints McCarthy as a bully. The implication is that McCarthy is going after a little boy, rather than a grown man who's also a Harvard-trained lawyer. It's possible the word choice was accidental, as words like girl and boy were more freely used back then, and Fisher was younger than Welch.
