Hideto Ogata (Akira Takarada)’s Timeline and Summary

Ogata receives a phone call about the mysterious disappearance of the Eiko-maru near Odo Island. He cancels his date with his girlfriend, Emiko, and goes to work.
Without much to do, he just kind of hangs out at the Coast Guard office as they try to figure out what's happening.
Ogata escorts Professors Yamane and Tanabe to Odo Island to investigate what happened there. He is one of the first witnesses to Godzilla in all its reptilian glory.
Ogata witnesses Godzilla's attack on mainland Japan and is terrified at what he sees.
When Yamane professes his belief that they should study rather than kill Godzilla, Ogata disagrees, believing the monster should be destroyed to save Japan. This goes about as well as any dinner-time political argument.
After Godzilla destroys Tokyo, Emiko confides in Ogata about Serizawa's Oxygen Destroyer.
Ogata goes to Serizawa to ask for the Oxygen Destroyer to kill Godzilla. First, they spar with fists, then they argue with words, and then Serizawa agrees.
Ogata and Serizawa scuba dive to the ocean floor and find Godzilla napping.
Ogata rises to the surface before realizing that Serizawa plans to stay behind and die with his invention.
Ogata and Emiko morn the death of their friend while also deciding to live happily together to honor Serizawa's final request.
