Character Analysis
Ryan, who by all accounts is Melanie's boyfriend, appears to be your stereotypical bad boy, or at least what Coetzee imagines one to be. He dresses head-to-toe in black, has an earring and a goatee, and drives a motorcycle. He often wears a cocky grin on his face that leaves David feeling unsettled. Ryan has no problem getting up in David's face and telling him to leave Melanie alone.
