George Valentin

If George is the protagonist of the movie then he's also the antagonist. George is his own worst enemy. His pride and stubbornness wreck his chance of success in transitional times.

He's got a dark side that shows itself when he won't communicate with his wife and contemplates killing himself. He's got his villain qualities too—he yells at his shadow and then laughs maniacally as he sets his apartment on fire. George may be in competition with Peppy for roles, but his conflict is ultimately an inner one, and we're always rooting for him despite (or maybe even because of) his flaws.
